And Showdown

Todd Newton is a good game show host IMO. But before he did Whammy! The All New Press Your Luck, he hosted Hollywood Showdown for GSN. This show was kind of like the pop culture version of the old game show Jackpot. This was actually a very good show. In 2000, it aired on PAX and GSN. The game had 7 contestants for a whole week, who had different amounts of money. One player who was chosen would face off to try and get the box office (which was always something $13,595. Whoever got 3 questions right out of multiple choice questions (there were 3 choices).

I liked the show. I remember first watching on GSN after it replaces 1980's reruns of Wheel of Fortune on weekday mornings back in 2004. I liked the show, and thought it was good. I would love for GSN to bring that show back. It was good. It was removed in 2005 when GSN decided to go older in daytime. It was last seen on the 50 Greatest Game Show Countdown in 2006. I liked it. Come on GSN, you seem to have really gone on Todd Newton Whammy! love, how about airing this again.

Online Pick of the Week (2/26) - Original Broadcast Rafferty's Card Sharks

Happy Leap Day. Well, one of my favorite YouTube users uploaded an episode of one of my favorite Game Shows. Card Sharks Bill Rafferty. It's an original broadcast too, so, this is awesome. When it comes to the 1980's versions, Rafferty wins the bet. Eubanks was OK, but his hosting style really isn't my favorite. Of course, I still think Perry's the best.

Online Pick of the Week (2/19) - 1978 Commercials

Well, this is boring. I'm bored and home alone. So I have selected for the week a string of 1978 Commercials. Just a whole bunch of stuff, like Dr. Pepper or Sears, or even Radio Shack. So enjoy these. Once again, this isn't my video.

Online Pick of the Week (2/12) - The Newlywed Game

Well, it's valentines day today, and for the week. So, I picked the ever popular Newlywed Game. But wait, no Sherri Shepherd, or Carnie Wilson. Nope, Bob Eubanks. Yes, this is a syndicated episode, probably have been seen numerous times. But it's still a classic. Here you go, a The Newlywed Game episode from 1979

More GSN Ratings, and Some More Notes

All rights, let's look at some more GSN ratings folks. The February 6-12 ratings are in. Well, I saw some interesting numbers all around. There were a few 500K's, and 400K's. That was actually a pretty darn good week if you ask me. Here are some observations I'd like to point out:

• Maybe block scheduling is good. Family Feud pulls big numbers on Monday Night.
5th Grader did decent in pretty much all slots. Hey, this show works.
• DWTS pulls OK numbers on Saturday nights. Let's forget about the other slots.
• Perry's Card Sharks and The $100,000 Pyramid are the greatest combination in mornings. 252K in the 10:00am hour. Match Game 74 at 11:30am did OK, but Eubanks in daytime just doesn't work. Try Pyramid or something else.
Wondering how the block scheduling stuff did? Here is the averages:

Feud Mondays - 442K
Newlywed Game - 332K
Baggage Wednesdays - 254K
Deal Thursdays - 346K
Dancing Fridays - 217K (second set 128K)
Dancing Saturdays - 241K
5th Grader Sundays - 462K

Feud, Newlywed Game, and Deal or No Deal rock latenights. While Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader reigns majestic over Sunday nights. Baggage has lost some steam apparently, not good IMO. I like this show. There are rumors it's going into syndication.

Dancing averaged 241K on Saturday nights. Not totally bad, but not good like on Monday night. But GSN can live with those numbers. Fridays (which I will speak about later) averaged 217K for the first set, and 128K for the second set (11:00am-4:00am). Not great, but it will probably do for now.

Also, you may have noticed that I deleted the post about The $100,000 Pyramid on Friday nights. It turns out that is not happening. They're going back with what the originally planned on showing, so that post does not need to be there. That's why the post is gone.

My Personal Top 10 Favorite Game Shows

1. Match Game 1973-1982 versions. Loved it, very funny, amazing host, announcer, gameplay and it was just funny.

2. Card Sharks (Perry/Rafferty) 2 best versions, the 1978 version was the best, Perry was a great host. Rafferty did good too. Loved the gameplay, it was fun.

3. The Price is Right with the exception of Davidson's version, this is a very good show. Each one is great, and each host contributed something great to put on the table

4. Family Feud (Dawson/O'Hurley/Karn/Harvey) Great hosts (listed in order of favortism) fun show, surveys, been around a long time. Sorry, Combs and Anderson sucked at hosting this show.

5. Password (All Versions). Fun word game to play. Allen Ludden was an awesome host. All other hosts did good too, especially Regis.

6. Let's Make a Deal - Monty Hall did great on the original 1963 version, that was a great team. The current version also is good too.

7. Pyramid -  With the exception of the John Davidson sorry revival, this show was amazing, an extension of password. Very fun. The 1980's versions were the best. Donny Osmond did OK, and the 70's versions vere fun too, not as exciting, but it was just getting started. Cullen did good too.

8. Press Your Luck - I have always found the whammies fascinating. This was a fun show for me, and Peter handled it well.

9. Blockbusters - This was also a fun quiz show IMO. Both Bill's did well. Bob Holness was amazing, and the UK version is great

10. Who Wants To Be a Millionaire (The Regis Years) - Regis was the best. I love the show, and I thought he handled it well. I never really got into Meredith. Yeah she's lasted longer, but my heart belongs to Regis (when it comes to Millionaire)

Other shows that I enjoy. Deal or No Deal, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy!, 1 vs. 100, Russian Roulette

Dancing With the Stars must have cost 2 arms and a leg. It ain't a epic fail like Love Triangle, but it ain't a hit like Baggage was. In fact, The $100,000 Pyramid does better. Here are the ratings:

Well, Howie did well, averaging 446K for his 5 hours. 5th Grader took a hit due to the Superbowl, but did about as good as the dreaded dancers. Hey its last showing got 380K.

How about we look at daytime.

8:00am - Match Game - 119K
8:30am - Match Game - 180K
9:00am - Family Feud (Dawson) - 158K
9:30am - Family Feud (Karn) - 174K
10:00am - Card Sharks (Perry) - 234K
10:30am  - The $100,000 Pyramid - 247K

11:30am - Match Game - 209K
12:00pm - Lingo (Woolery) - 186K
12:30pm - Lingo (Woolery) - 220K
1:00pm - Deal or No Deal - 196K
2:00pm - Catch-21 - 237K
2:30pm - Lingo (Engvall) - 212K

Wow, The $100,000 Pyramid did really well. Catch-21 did 2nd in daytime, and Card Sharks with Jim Perry did well. Eubanks just doens't work out though.

Before Dick Handled it

Can't sleep very well. No problem. I'll just blog. Well, people love the Pyramid franchise very much, in the game show field. People love The $25,000 Pyramid very much as well. And when people think of Pyramid they think of Dick Clark. Well, Dick Clark was the first Pyramid host. But he was not the host of The $25,000 Pyramid. Nope, Bill Cullen was the first.

He hosted the Syndicated version of the show from September 1974-1979. It was billed as The $25,000 Pyramid. It was a weekly show. I thought Bill did pretty good. Did better than Davidson IMHO. Dick Clark played a couple times as a celebrity. I liked it very much.

Online PIck of the Week (2/5) - GSN Let's Make a Deal Promos

For this week, I feature something different. A series of GSN promos from 2001 promoting an older game show (they used to do that). These came from 2001 from Let's Make a Deal with Monty Hall from the 1970's. I like the Jay Stewart ones. Oh these are funny. Be on the look out for these guys on YouTube, because their on there.
